Finding and governing the AI tools, accounts, coding agents, and MCP servers that people use without approval.
Shadow AI is AI used for work outside an organization's approval or view: a personal ChatGPT or Claude account on a work laptop, an AI feature switched on inside an approved SaaS app, a coding agent installed with npm, an MCP server added to a config file, or a model running locally. Each kind leaves evidence in a different place. DNS and gateway logs show which services the network reached, identity and expense data show sign-ups, MDM inventory and config files show what's installed, an endpoint agent ties each connection to a signed app and a person, and coding agent hooks record what an approved agent did. No single control covers every kind, and no hostname tells a personal account from a company one on the same service, which takes the vendor's tenant controls. Blocking without an approved alternative pushes people further out of view, so discovery and a fast approval path work together.
Start with what shadow AI is, for the seven kinds and which control sees each. Then use the detection guide to run a one-week discovery with the sources you already have. Read the coding agent guide for developer machines and the personal accounts guide for tenant controls, and use the tools guide when you're ready to compare products.
